Autumn Term 2 Topic – ‘Life is like a box of chocolates’
Hook with a book: 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio
Guided Reading: 'Jake Atlas and the Tomb of the Emerald Snake' by Rob Lloyd Jones
Discussing emotions, feelings, making and maintaining friendships, building up life skills is an important part of our learning journey. This Term’s activities are launched with a captivating novel written by celebrated children's writer R.J. Palacio. August or Auggie is a young boy who must go to school after being home-schooled until the age of ten due to his medical condition. The novel talks about Auggie's interactions with his parents, other children and about how he faces school. It creates in children a compassion for those who are less fortunate and talks about the differences that can build great friendships.
A learning journey full of wonder! Children adopted Auggie instantaneously! He became a relevant part of our life for this half term and opened lots of doors for discussions and debate! We enjoyed exploring characters, their feelings, their actions. We loved debating and we wrote balanced arguments about the things that we are interested in. We explored events that changed people’s life and read about people (scientists, inventors, writers, etc) that worked very hard to make our world a better place! We also chose R.J. Palacio’s words as one of the best quotes we read so far: “You can't blend in when you were born to stand out.”
